CBD Spectrums and the Entourage Effect

March 4, 2020

 Howdy!

This is Claire, from Your CBD Store, Waupaca.

CBD Spectrums and the Entourage Effect

Every day we are at the store, we meet people from all walks of life, and they all want to know the same thing “What’s up with this CBD stuff?”.

We LOVE this question, and we LOVE that people know they can come to us for up-to-date information on the science behind ‘that CBD stuff’.

In this post, I’m going to address one of the most commonly misunderstood topics we run into– CBD Spectrums and the Entourage Effect. While that may seem like the title to an epic 1980s hair metal album, it’s not. What it is, CBD Spectrums and the Entourage Effect is actually the phrase the CBD industry uses to address the presence or lack of cannabinoids, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the intoxicating element of cannabis) in CBD products. This concept is one that many people, and frequently those who have been using other brands of CBD, often don’t fully understand.

In the United States, the majority of CBD products are derived from Industrial Hemp, with the exception of a few formulas derived from medical marijuana, which is only available through state-licensed dispensaries. Although the plant’s overall chemical structure is different, there is research suggesting that CBD can now also be extracted from certain strains of the hops plant as well.

An industrial hemp plant has less than .3% THC, so, when we talk about CBD having THC, we aren’t talking about the intoxicating levels found in marijuana. These low levels, however, have been reported to be therapeutic by researchers and customers alike.

The first CBD Spectrum we’re going to look at is the Full Spectrum. With this spectrum when the significant chemicals are extracted from the plant, all of the plant chemicals (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and more) are retained and used in products. Think “Full Spectrum, full plant” and maximum Entourage Effect.

The second Spectrum we see is Broad Spectrum. In Broad Spectrum, the chemicals are given a second extraction to remove the THC components, while leaving the other beneficial plant chemicals in-tact. This is ideal for people who may want to avoid THC.

There is also a third Spectrum to be aware of, known as Isolate. In this extraction process, all of the additional plant chemicals, including the other cannabinoids, are extracted, leaving only isolated CBD.

In the beginning stages of CBD research, isolates exploded in popularity. I mean, pure CBD has to be the best right?! Well, not really.

In the last few years, researchers started moving away from isolate based research and began looking into the full chemical list available from whole-plant hemp extract. From this research, it was discovered that while CBD might be a power player in hemp, the other plant chemicals present really DID increase the overall potency and effectiveness of CBD on test subjects, this is called the Entourage Effect! Everything working together for a maximum potential benefit.

Could CBD be the key to healthy aging?

Could CBD be the key to healthy aging?

Here we are, three months into the year 2020, and by now just about everyone has heard about hemp or CBD products. Whether from a friend, a family member, in a store or on TV, there is no denying it–the CBD revolution is now. According to a recent Gallup Poll, 14% of Americans use CBD products to support their wellness. While health deterioration is an unavoidable part of the aging process, CBD may be the key to unlocking naturally positive effects on the body’s overall condition and vitality.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of more than 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The term hemp applies to cannabis plants that have high levels of CBD and low levels of the more controversial cannabinoid, Tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC. Because THC is associated with getting high, there is a popular opinion out there that THC is bad and CBD is good when, in reality, these cannabinoids work especially well together and both have important places in clinical practice.

Our bodies produce different forms of cannabinoids regularly as part of our endocannabinoid system. The cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, such as CBD and THC, are commonly referred to as phytocannabinoids and can bind to the human endocannabinoid system. Research suggests these plant-derived cannabinoids can impact our various biological functions when taken internally.

CBD is a biphasic substance. When a low dose of CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, consumers have reported feelings of wakefulness and alertness. This is compared to a consumer ingesting more substantial amounts of CBD, who then may potentially get sleepy and calm instead of alert and energetic. The biphasic nature of this compound is one of the many reasons CBD is so versatile, and commonly being used by more and more aging adults every day.

While still unregulated– only one drug consisting of CBD, Epidiolex, has been approved by the FDA–much of the data out there about CBD is anecdotal. What we are seeing is that cannabinoid therapy and CBD use is seeming to be a low-risk, potentially beneficial way to treat a variety of complications, especially those associated with the aging process.

Though it’s often well-tolerated, according to the FDA and Mayo Clinic, CBD can cause low-risk side effects such as dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness, and fatigue. CBD can also interact with other medications, specifically blood thinners and other similar drugs so it is best to consult a physician before beginning to ingest CBD products. Topicals, however, do not penetrate the blood/brain barrier

Of course, you want the best for your loved ones, and if you are taking or considering starting a CBD regimen, you’ll want to know the science behind your product. Look for organically grown hemp products that have brand transparency. Random samplings of CBD products consistently detect misrepresentation between their labels and their contents. Do not purchase a product that cannot provide lab reports. Every CBD product should be lab tested by an accredited third party lab with test results available from the item’s label or online. This ensures the consumer that they are purchasing a legitimate product that is free of contaminants and made with verified ingredients.

New Year, New You: Starting A CBD Regimen in 2020

December 23, 2019

The New Year is a perfect time to set new intentions, get inspired and set grand ambitions. A long-standing tradition, making resolutions can often be challenging to put into practice, and even more so to sustain. Are you ready for a New Year, New You?

New Year, New You

Common themes with New Year’s resolutions are to prioritize self-care, adopt a healthier lifestyle, or try something new. Maybe you’ve heard of people using hemp or cannabidiol (CBD) oil and are curious what all the hype is about, or maybe you tried it for a short time and want to get back to it. No matter what changes you plan to set in motion, bringing CBD oil into your routine could be a complementary goal to set. It’s never too late for a fresh start and using CBD daily is something that can easily be done.

There are a variety of hemp products available on the market that make it easy to use and consume CBD. Because CBD continues to grow in popularity, these days people often feel like just about everyone is selling it, and for good reason.  But what is really going on behind all those flashy labels, what’s actually in the product? Beyond that, how do you know what the best option is for you?

As you may know, hemp products are not yet regulated by the FDA and there are many standards that have yet to be officially put into place. It is largely up to the consumer to ensure that what they are purchasing is an authentic, quality product. When shopping for CBD, look for things like thorough labeling, accredited third party lab reports, accountability with the company, and traceability behind the brand.

Anyone—be it corporate retailers or small town shops—selling CBD products should be able to provide this basic information to their customers and if they can’t, then the product is likely not worth your investment of money or time.

After you’ve done your homework and made your purchase, it’s time for your CBD story to begin! Journaling is not only an excellent way to reflect on your personal growth and New Years Resolutions but also to keep track of your supplement dosage.

When your consuming CBD internally, consistency is key. A common general industry recommendation is to begin by taking 10mg twice a day, preferably after a meal, and increase the dose size and/or frequency as needed after a week.

Topicals, such as lotions and creams, are also quite popular. Additionally, vaping natural hemp extract continues to be a common method of consumption, often in conjunction with ingesting CBD and/or using it externally.

So now you know the ways to use CBD, are you ready to get started? New Year’s resolutions are hard, but with a little commitment, you can do it! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and be sure to celebrate your accomplishments and milestones, be them big or small. Feeling better is also an excellent motivator and can help you to stay on track and grow into the best version of yourself possible.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and make 2020 the healthiest year yet!

Your CBD Store in the News

July 23, 2019

It’s no secret Your CBD Stores offer amazing CBD products. Located in Waupaca, Oshkosh, and Weston, our family of three stores serve the Central Wisconsin area and are owned and operated by Waupaca native, Morgan Trone. We’re becoming well-known for being one of the best providers of high-quality CBD products and CBD education in a professional, comfortable environment.

Our flagship store opened in October of 2018 and was the first of it’s kind in Wisconsin at the time, located in beautiful Waupaca.

The quality of products and the customer experience we provide has even inspired other business owners to open similar stores in their home states like Mike Koester did! We’ve received media recognition at each one of our locations and have even been visited by hemp advocate and State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski.

Having opened in January of 2019, our Oshkosh location boasts the largest floor space out of our three stores and is conveniently located next to popular shops and the Marcus Oshkosh Cinema. Like all our stores, we often have customers who come in because their physician sent them over and/or they know someone who as experienced positive results from using our Sunmed CBD products.

Our northernmost location is in Weston and opened doors for business in February of 2019 with a grand opening in March, which attracted media attention from local press, such as News 12, City Pages, and the Wausau Daily Herald. A cozy store with a large selection, our stores offer a variety of products for all your CBD needs. Channel 9 News included us in a recent report as there are many things that set us apart from other retail stores that have begun selling CBD in the Weston and Wausau area. Specifically, our staff provides CBD education and one-on-one consultations to help customers find the product that best suits their needs.

So what’s next for our family of Your CBD Stores? Continuing to provide exceptional products and service, furthering community involvement, and providing resources to customers who want to avoid the psychoactive, and currently illegal, effects of THC and Marijuana. When asked her thoughts on Gov. Tony Ever’s medical marijuana proposal, owner Morgan Trone said,

“Anything that medical marijuana can do, CBD can do just as well. There’s just so many people that have come back using just the CBD and have found relief from pain and anxiety, depression, ptsd, all sorts of things.”

We’re proud of our products and pleased with how quickly our business has grown. Thank you for your support and for letting us be part of your wellness journey!
